Some of us at my work are having a little friendly competition to keep us motivated to continue working out when we’re all cold, tired and depressed from this craptastic winter we’re having. One of my co-workers came up with the idea and is kind enough to manage all this for us. Basically, we let her know when we’ve fulfilled our quote for the day (minimum of 45 minutes continuous of exercise) and she logs it. We get a sticker to put on our calendar for the day to show off how much (or how little) we’re doing.
Here’s where the fun part comes in:
She put up a big map of the US in her office and drew a route from Columbus, Ohio to our newest property in Honolulu, Hawaii. With stops at several other malls of ours along the way. For every 45 minutes we work out we get 25 miles. We advance on the map as we go and the first one to Hawaii “wins”. I don’t think there are any prizes involved, but it’s still pretty cool. I’m tied in first place right now with 2 other people. We’re in Minnesota.
I have to say it’s working. Since I need to report my time to someone else, I’m most definitely more motivated to get out of bed and do it. No one is going to call me lazy or think any less of me if I don’t work out 6 days a week, but still there’s always that fear of judgment from others. Hey, if it’s getting me out of bed and working out I’ll take it.
